Communications Manager



Location: Works remotely. Global, with preference in Europe/UK

Reporting to: Director

Direct Reports: Initially none

Salary: £45,000 - £50,000 per annum


This is a pivotal role in our growing international organization to lead on the development and implementation of ESSA’s external and internal communication strategy and manage multiple projects within this strategy. The role will exercise as a bridging function between the variety of our audiences and the variety of environments we work in, in Africa, Europe and globally. The ESSA Communications Manager is the organization’s key role to communicate effectively with the corporate world as well as with the education communities in order to convey our interest and support for the nexus between tertiary education and work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop the charity’s external and internal communication strategy, with a strong evidence-based and analytical approach, including options and opportunities for events

  • Identify and understand ESSA’s target audiences and co-create strategies to effectively engage them

  • Develop and position the ESSA brand, building on our unique purpose and the brand of our supporters, the priority being to position us as a “go to place” for partners and investors interested in the support of Tertiary Education

  • Develop ESSA’s voice with a variety of audiences globally, the aim being to position the organization as a convener, providing access to knowledge, networks and solutions



  • Lead on the development of the charity’s digital strategy and manage multiple projects within this strategy

  • Develop an analytical framework to measure the success of ESSA’s digital strategy, apply the framework and adapt when needed, the aim being to generate dialogue about the significance of Tertiary Education/work globally and in particular with our key audiences

  • Have overall responsibly for the development and maintenance of the charity’s website, social networks and social media channels

  • Work closely with the team to create other digital resources

  • Have overall editorial control of the website and lead on website development projects, supported by the programme team

  • Have overall responsibility for the relationships with our digital agency


  • Have overall responsibility for the Charity’ style guide and branding guidelines, championing the brand identity and ensuring it evolves to meet needs

  • Have overall responsibility for the key messages (& template materials) used by the charity to ensure consistency across all external communications and ensure that these are in line with the charity’s tone of voice and proposition language

  • Lead on the development of the charity’s impact report including concept, commissioning design and copywriting, production and print

  • Act as the charity’s brand custodian, with final approval of the Director for all new pieces of design

  • Assist in the further development of all ESSA’s public relations materials to increase our visibility

Media Relations

  • Fulfil the press office function, prepare statements and press releases


    Internal Communications

  • Organise and support ongoing communication within our distributed organization

  • Manage communications to the board, team and consultants to ensure they are aware of all charity developments and updates, making sure all keep informed and engaged

  • Prepare and send a regular bulletin to staff on important developments

  • Assist with the communications to our key supporters and support them to talk about the charity and our mission using ESSA’s key messages.

More important than academic degrees are robust practical experiences e.g. in communications or marketing.




  •  Significant experience in communications development

  • Track record of developing and delivering communications strategies using a range of channels and managing a variety of messages and audiences.

  • Experience of developing engaging and creative content and ensuring the site is up to date and in line with our organisational style guide.

  • Experience ensuring brand identity is applied and delivered consistently.

  • Experience of working with third party suppliers.

  • Experience working in stakeholder and network management relations

  • Strong Interest in Africa and education.



  • Work experience in Africa or working experience with African organisations most welcome.

  • An excellent writer, editor and proof reader with the ability to adapt writing style to target different audiences.

  • Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems quickly and effectively

  • Ability to actively engage colleagues and other stakeholders with evidence and analysis to plan, develop and improve corporate communications.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Thorough working knowledge of all social media platforms, ability to upload content to ESSA’s website, formulate documents and other communication materials

  • Resilience and relentlessness to achieve their objectives

  • Ability and readiness to work in a distributed and remotely structured organization

  • Proven ability to work independently, under pressure, demonstrating initiative and flexibility


  • Ideally perfect command of the French language
